A successful two-day health check-up camp held at Shoolini University campus and Share and Care Old Age Recreational Centre

Day one of the camp was organized on the campus of Shoolini University under the leadership of Mrs. Poonam Nanda. Facilities available for the teaching staff and the auxiliary staff included oral cancer detection, oral health checkup, breast cancer check-up through iBreastExam machine, Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation, pulse rate and blood pressure measurement. A total number of 199 were patients screened out of which 105 were women and 94 were men. The age of patients screened ranged from 18 – 63 years with an average age of around 30 years. All patients were screened for oral cancer, oral health checkup, body mass index, pulse rate and blood pressure. Approximately 95 women were screened for breast cancer through the iBreastExam machine. At the dental check-up, 33 patients had a good oral hygiene. However, all other patients required dental treatment for various reasons like chronic generalized gingivitis, localized periodontitis, carious teeth, mobile teeth and prosthodontic rehabilitation for missing teeth. At the oral cancer detection, 1 patient was diagnosed with oral submucous fibrosis, rest all were healthy with no gross abnormalities. No woman had any symptom of breast condition and the iBreastExam revealed that all women are healthy. 2 patients were measured with high blood pressure and were asked to get themselves checked further by a general physician. BMI of all patients appeared to be normal. All patients were given health education regarding the correct method of brushing teeth and tobacco cessation. IEC material in the form of pamphlets was distributed and women were educated about the most common symptoms of breast cancer. The day two of the camp was organized at Share and Care Old Age Recreational Centre, Solan District, Himachal Pradesh, under the leadership of Mrs. Poonam Nanda on 4th October. Facilities available for the patients included oral cancer detection, oral health check-up, breast cancer check-up through the iBreastExam machine, Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation, pulse rate and blood pressure measurement. A total number of 48 were patients screened out of which 31 were women and 17 were male. The age of patients screened ranged from 43 – 97 years with an average age of around 60 years. All 48 patients were screened for oral cancer, oral health check-up, body mass index, pulse rate and blood pressure. 31 women were screened for breast cancer through the iBreastExam machine. At the dental check-up, 12 patients had complete dentures or removable partial dentures which were comfortable and 3 patients had good oral hygiene. However, 33 patients required dental treatment for various reasons like chronic generalized/localized periodontitis, carious teeth, mobile teeth and prosthodontic rehabilitation for missing teeth. At the oral cancer detection, 1 patient was diagnosed with oral submucous fibrosis and rest all were healthy with no gross abnormalities. One woman was detected positive at the breast health screening. Rest all woman had no symptoms of major sickness and on examination with the iBreastExam machine, they were found to be healthy. The patient detected positive was further referred for a localized ultrasound. 22 patients were measured with high blood pressure and were asked to get themselves checked further by a general physician. Doctors present at this two-day camp included Dr. Nganba Khundrapam, Dr. Sagar Chawla and Dr. Sumedha Kushwaha. Two staff members of UE LifeSciences India Pvt Ltd attending the Camp were Ms. Rinki and Ms. Radhika A ‘youth and drugs’ health talk was held for undergraduate students of SILB by Dr. Sumedha and Dr. Nganba. The doctors performed an experiment for the students to extract tar out of a cigarette. The talk emphasized on the various types of drugs available, signs and symptoms of drug abuse and coping mechanisms when in need. The talk was attended by around 300 students and was very well appreciated. It was followed by a live demonstration by Dr. Nganba which made a permanent imprint in the lives of the students. A health camp was organized at SILB Institute, Solan District, Himachal Pradesh, India under the leadership of Mrs. Poonam Nanda from 4.15 pm – 5.30 pm. Same facilities were available for the staff members which were there for the other patients. 20 staff members, which were all women, attended the camp. No woman was found positive for breast cancer and oral hygiene also seemed good.
