Government Medical College & Hospital-Ariyalur
During the second wave of the pandemic, Tamil Nadu witnessed a massive consumption of medical oxygen during May 2021, with the state being extremely close to running out of stock.
The Government Medical College & Hospital Ariyalur caters to both urban as well as rural parts of Ariyalur and nearby districts, covering approximately 9,60,000 people from marginalized backgrounds. These people suffered the most during the pandemic due to acute shortage of oxygenated beds at various government hospitals. Even though Government Medical College & Hospital Ariyalur had allocated 400 general beds for COVID-19 patients, the lifesaving critical care equipment available at the hospital was not adequate.
The Director of Medical Education, Ministry of Health, Government of Tamil Nadu, was well aware of our Mission 1000 Beds initiative and was extremely happy with the set up done at Madurai. He requested for additional support to the state by adding a 100-bedded COVID-19 Critical Care facility to the Government Medical College & Hospital Ariyalur in order to minimize the impact of the second wave and address issues of lack of oxygen and healthcare infrastructure prior to being hit by a possible third wave. Therefore, YouWeCan Foundation added a 100-bedded facility to the hospital.
The facility was handed over to the hospital authorities on October 28, 2021.
A total of 7993 patients have benefited so far at this facility.
