The YouWeCan Foundation has been working in Jammu & Kashmir since the last few years for our Cancer Treatment Fund. While conducting our research during the initial phase of the Mission 1000 Beds initiative, we spoke to our existing associates in the region and were informed how hospitals in the region were overloaded with COVID-19 patients.
Most hospitals in the Union Territory were seeing critically ill patients seeking admissions at tertiary care hospitals wherein the number of patients requiring hospitalization was much more than the COVID-19 critical care bed capacity.
It was also found in an article in Hindustan Times that the doctors were seeing a higher percentage of young patients being affected by COVID-19. Moreover, many patients without any comorbidities also required admission in the hospital as their saturation levels were not normal. This was something which was not seen in the first wave of the pandemic.
This warranted an immediate action and expansion in the current capacity of COVID-19 critical care beds in the UT.
Our team wrote a letter of intent to the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir sharing the details of the Mission 1000 Beds initiative. On receipt of our letter, we were immediately connected to Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Director, New Medical Colleges-Jammu & Kashmir. Dr. Sharma went way above and beyond to help us implement the project on the ground within the stipulated turnaround time.
Dr. Samia Rashid, Dean, Government Medical College Srinagar, and Dr. Abdul Rashid Parra, Medical Superintendent, DRDO COVID Hospital, were extremely supportive throughout the project implementation.
The facility was handed over to the hospital authorities on August 27, 2021.
A total of 570 patients have benefited so far at this facility.
