Project Name

Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute - Bangalore

The facility has been added to the COVID-19 unit of the Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute, which caters to both urban as well as rural parts of Bangalore and nearby districts, covering a population of approximately 9,90,923 belonging to extreme marginalized backgrounds.

These people suffered the most during the pandemic due to acute shortage of oxygenated beds at various government hospitals, which created immense stress on our healthcare system. Even though BMCRI had allocated 400 general beds for COVID-19 patients, the available lifesaving critical care equipment was not adequate.

The hospital was selected because Bangalore became the epicenter of COVID-19 cases in the state of Karnataka during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Being the service industry hub, Bangalore has a very high intra-city mobility, which added to the woes of the residents of the city as well neighboring districts who were referred to BMCRI for better care.

All the beds in the COVID-19 wards as well as the ICU beds were full with multiple patients lining up at the hospital seeking treatment. However, the hospital was in no position to admit additional patients due to unavailability of beds.

The YouWeCan Foundation contacted the hospital and based on a discussion with the hospital management, the Foundation decided to develop a 100-bedded critical care facility to address the gaps that came to the limelight during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

The facility was handed over to the hospital authorities on September 9, 2021.
