Even after the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the state of Telangana was over, Mahabubnagar continued to report an extremely high number of new COVID-19 cases. In the last week of July 2021, Mahabubnagar had the greatest number of containment zones in Telangana with as many as 191 containment zones.
The Government Medical College & Government General Hospital Mahabubnagar caters to the people of Mahabubnagar district as well as the neighboring districts of Gadwal, Narayanpet, Kagarkurnool, Wanaparthy and a few more, covering a population of approximately 50 lakhs belonging to extreme marginalized background.
These people suffered the most during the pandemic due to acute shortage of oxygenated beds at various government hospitals. Even though GMC had allocated 500 general beds for COVID-19 patients, the lifesaving critical care equipment was not adequate, which created extreme stress on the existing infrastructure of the hospital.
In alignment with the healthcare requirement of the region, the Foundation contacted the Medical College and after a discussion with the hospital management, the Foundation decided to develop a 50-bedded critical care facility to address the gaps that were identified during the second wave of the pandemic.
The facility was handed over to the hospital authorities on September 15, 2021.
