Govt. Rajaji Hospital Madurai

Several weeks before the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the city of Madurai, Government Rajaji Hospital, which is one of the major hospitals in the region, began augmenting the existing facilities as a preparedness measure. The existing infrastructure, which only had a capacity of 400 oxygenated beds, was increased to 1100 oxygenated beds.

Despite taking steps in advance to avoid overburdening the hospital’s infrastructure, Government Rajaji Hospital, which was catering to a population of approximately twenty lakhs covering Madurai, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Theni and Putthukotai districts, faced difficulty in providing adequate oxygenated beds to the rapidly rising cases when the second wave struck the region.

When our team contacted Government Rajaji Hospital’s Dean Dr. Rathinavel, he was extremely thankful and supportive of our initiative of setting up a 100-bedded critical care facility, including a 30-bedded set up for pediatric patients, as the second wave was expected to affect the younger population as well.

The facility was handed over to the hospital authorities on July 26, 2021.

A total of 1822 patients have benefited so far at this facility.
