Maximum number of deaths in Madhya Pradesh during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic were reported in Indore. As the positivity rate was high and with maximum patients requiring oxygen support, many lives were lost due to unavailability of oxygenated beds.
In alignment with the healthcare requirement, the Foundation contacted the biggest medical college in the city, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC). This hospital catered to the population of approximately 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh as well as to people belonging to extreme marginalized backgrounds.
Even though MGMMC had allocated 500 beds for COVID-19 patients, the available life-saving critical care equipment was not adequate. After a discussion with the hospital management, we decided to develop an 80-bedded critical care facility to address the gap.
Out of these 80 beds, a 50-bedded critical care setup was developed for pediatric patients at ChaCha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya as it was expected that the third wave of the pandemic could be harmful especially for the pediatric population. Moreover, a 30-bedded critical care setup was developed at the Government Cancer Hospital for the critical care of cancer patients being affected by COVID-19.
Both the facilities were handed over to the hospital authorities on August 27, 2021.
A total of 1573 pediatric patients and a total of 2481 cancer patients have benefited so far at this facility.
